IMAN
Go Green Griot Plaza

The newly-opened Go Green Griot Plaza is an outdoor creative hub that commemorates the legacy of the griot — the West African storytellers revered for preserving the legacy of their communities — and pays tribute to the power of story to connect, inspire, and drive our collective efforts forward. Connected to IMAN's Go Green Community Fresh Market, the Griot Plaza acts as a vital milestone in the broader effort to advocate for food and transit justice through initiatives such as the IMAN Food & Wellness Center, the re-opening of the Racine Station and the Granville T. Woods Regenerator.

Project goals

As part of Gertie's Next Stop: Chicago campaign, IMAN invites Englewood residents and southside commuters to visit the Go Green Community fresh Market, grab a smoothie and enjoy in this outdoor creative hub. Alongside helping to create vibrancy and vitality on the important 63rd and Racine node and to drive interest in and traffic to the Market, the Plaza hosts artistic performances, health workshops, vendor pop-ups, community forums, cooking demonstrations, community cook-outs, art projects, open-mics and more. The Plaza is the latest in the series of City of Chicago-supported POP Court venues opening up on once-vacant and abandoned land, and marks an important milestone in the effort to draw attention and further investment into critical projects like the reopening of the Racine Green Line Station and the Granville T. Woods Regenerator project on the same intersection.

The Go Green Griot Plaza was made possible by the City of Chicago Department of Planning and Development and the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, and with the generous support of The Kresge Foundation, the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation, and the Gertie Foundation. This space was also funded in part by the Healing Illinois grant, made by The Field Foundation of Illinois in partnership with the Illinois Department of Human Services and by the American Rescue Plan Act, a part of Mayor Brandon Johnson’s Road to Recovery Plan.
